The Pittsburgh Steelers are rolling with Mitch Trubisky as their starter while Kenny Pickett recovers from a high ankle sprain, but with just Mason Rudolph on the bench, the team will sift through their outside options for a QB3.

Under the NFL’s new rule, the Steelers can have three quarterbacks available on gameday without having to utilize a roster spot for their active list. That quarterback is technically inactive for gameday, but if their starter and backup are unable to play, the QB3 is allowed to step in.

Prior to Pickett’s injury, Rudolph was the team’s third-string quarterback who dressed on gamedays. Now, he’ll be active and behind Trubisky. As for the Steelers’ third passer, they’ll look at outside options to sign.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will make a move to add another quarterback within the next day as they prepare for the New England Patriots on a short week.

“We’ll address that here in the next 24 hours. We’ve got options there, certainly,” Tomlin said.

The Steelers could look to sign Tanner Morgan off of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad after spending the summer with them. Other notable free agents include Matt Ryan, Colt McCoy, and Jeff Driskel, among others.
